Amorim Backs Maguire for England Recall

Ruben Amorim believes Harry Maguire deserves a return to the England squad as Thomas Tuchel prepares for his first games in charge.

Tuchel will lead the Three Lions for the first time later this month in matches against Albania and Latvia. Maguire, capped 64 times, missed out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad due to injury and has only played once under interim boss Lee Carsley.

However, since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, Maguire has been a key player. The 31-year-old has made 27 appearances across all competitions this season, registering 88 clearances—second only to Matthijs de Ligt among United defenders. He also leads the team in headed clearances (62) and aerial duels won (69).

Amorim feels Maguire has done enough to earn a recall to Tuchel’s squad.

“The final decision is up to the national coach, but I would be really happy for him. I think he deserves it,” Amorim said.

“He’s a great professional and still has room for improvement—every player does. But his current performances are strong, and he’s grown into a real leader who can contribute to the national team. I hope he gets selected.”

Despite United’s struggles in the Premier League, they remain in contention for silverware and face Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday. Amorim is optimistic about the club’s direction under INEOS, which now oversees football operations at Old Trafford.

“They are making tough but necessary decisions with a clear vision,” Amorim said. “However, in the end, results matter. Changes alone aren’t enough—success must follow. The path is clear, and while it’s difficult now, we are working toward future success.”
