Thai Government Cracks Down on Illegal Foreign Workers

February 21, 2025 – Thailand’s Minister of Labour, Pipat Rakcharoen, has authorized a special operation unit, “Troi Hite Patek,” to carry out inspections in an effort to address illegal foreign workers and human trafficking issues at the MBK (Mahboonkrong) shopping mall.

During the inspection, a total of 22 individuals, including 20 Myanmar nationals, 1 Syrian, and 1 Indian, were arrested for illegal employment. The inspection was a joint effort between the Ministry of Labour, the Department of Employment, the National Police Force, and the Pathumwan Police Station. The arrested individuals were transported to the Pathumwan Police Station, where legal action will be taken.

Strict Measures to Be Enforced
Piphat Thonpan, the leader of the special inspection unit “Troi Hite Patek,” stated, “The Thai government is taking strict action to control illegal workers in the country, and the employment of foreign nationals in jobs that should be reserved for Thai citizens limits the job opportunities for Thai nationals.”

Illegal employment can result in fines ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 Baht, and individuals may be deported to their home country. Additionally, employers who hire illegal foreign workers can face fines ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 Baht. If they are found to have violated the law again, they may face up to one year in prison, a fine ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 Baht, or both. Moreover, such employers will be prohibited from hiring foreign workers for the next three years.

Public Reporting of Illegal Employment
The Ministry of Labour encourages the public to report any information related to illegal foreign workers to the Ministry (1506) or to Mr. Meta of the special operation unit “Troi Hite Patek.”

Pipat Thonpan concluded, “We will strictly enforce the law regarding the employment of illegal foreign workers. Employers are urged to comply with relevant laws and regulations.”
